After a prolonged heatwave that has marked the past few days, parts of Croatia could finally see at least a brief respite on Saturday, August 8, 2026. According to the latest forecast from the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ), the country's interior will see more changeable weather with local showers, while the Adriatic will continue to experience scorching temperatures, with a heatwave warning still in effect.
As Kristina Klemenčić Novinc, a graduate engineer from DHMZ, explained to Zagreb.info, eastern Croatia will be partly sunny on Saturday. During the first part of the day, passing clouds with occasional rain and thunderstorms are more likely. A moderate north and northeast wind will blow, weakening in the afternoon. The morning will bring a low of around 21°C, with daytime highs expected between 31 and 33°C.
A similar situation will unfold in central Croatia, where the forecast predicts slightly lower values. During the night and morning, it will be temporarily cloudier, with rain in places. "Moreover, more pronounced showers are possible, followed by frequent sunny spells. The wind will be light to moderate from the northeast," Klemenčić Novinc emphasized.
Unlike the interior, the northern Adriatic coast will be significantly windier. DHMZ forecasts a moderate to strong bura wind, which will reach storm-force gusts under Velebit. The western part of the country will be partly sunny, with the coast and islands seeing mostly sunny conditions. Local showers, with stronger cloud development, are more likely in the afternoon in Istria and Gorski Kotar.
The temperature range will be wide. The lowest morning temperature in the mountainous region will drop to around 16°C, in the interior of Istria it will range from 19 to 22°C, and on the northern Adriatic, it will not fall below 28°C in some places. During the day, temperatures in the mountains, the interior of Istria, and the northern Adriatic will mostly be between 27 and 32°C, but on the far northern Adriatic, up to 34°C is possible. Therefore, the heatwave warning remains in effect.
As expected, Dalmatia will be the hottest. "A very high risk of heat-related health issues exists in mostly sunny Dalmatia, where daytime air temperatures will occasionally reach 37°C," warns Klemenčić Novinc. However, even Dalmatia will not be spared from instability. Due to daytime cloud development inland, there will be local showers with thunderstorms that could extend all the way to the coast. A weak bura will blow, moderate in the north, temporarily turning to a northwest or southwest wind around midday.
In the far south of Croatia, the sea will be calm or slightly choppy, and the weather will not be particularly windy. A mostly warm night and a hot day will prevail, with maximum daytime air temperatures ranging from 35 to 38°C. Although there will be an abundance of sunshine, DHMZ advises that the possibility of afternoon showers should be considered, mainly in the Konavle area.
In short, Croatia will experience a weather divide on Saturday: the interior with welcome relief and local showers, and the Adriatic with continued summer heat, stronger winds, and only an isolated chance of a refreshing shower.
