At least 12 people were killed and 39 injured in a massive drone attack on the city of Nizhnekamsk in Russia's Tatarstan republic, local authorities confirmed on Monday, August 10, 2026. The drones struck both industrial and civilian targets, and according to the mayor, the attack was still ongoing. Due to the severity of the tragedy, Tatarstan's leader Rustam Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning.
While most sources, including Russia's state agency TASS and the independent channel Wargonzo, report 12 dead and 39 injured, there are also differing preliminary reports. According to the source RVvoenkor, in the first hours after the attack, 10 deaths, 15 wounded, and 15 other casualties were reported. These discrepancies in numbers are common in chaotic situations immediately following an attack while emergency services are still searching through the rubble.
The mayor of Nizhnekamsk, Radmir Belyayev, stated on Telegram that unspecified industrial and civilian targets were hit and that the attack was still active. The press service of the Tatarstan government confirmed the tragic outcome, stating that "unfortunately, there are casualties."
Nizhnekamsk is strategically important because it hosts the TANECO oil refinery, one of the most technologically advanced in Russia, owned by the company Tatneft. According to unverified videos on social media, smoke was rising above what appears to be the refinery facility, suggesting it was also a target. Reuters could not independently confirm the authenticity of these videos.
This is not the first time TANECO has been targeted; Ukraine had already struck it in early June. In 2024, the refinery processed 17 million tons of crude oil, producing 2.7 million tons of gasoline and 8.5 million tons of diesel fuel, making it a key part of Russia's energy infrastructure. Information on the extent of damage to the facilities has not yet been released.
In response to the crisis, an operational headquarters was established in the city. Five medical teams were sent from the nearby city of Naberezhnye Chelny, along with a brigade from the Republican Center for Disaster Medicine, to assist the large number of injured. Tatarstan's leader Rustam Minnikhanov declared a day of mourning for those killed in this devastating attack, which represents a significant escalation in the conflict.
Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian oil refineries in recent months, a campaign that, according to Reuters, has caused occasional fuel shortages in parts of Russia. Although Russian authorities claim that most of these initial problems have been resolved, the attack on Nizhnekamsk shows that the threat persists and that targets are increasingly deep within Russian territory.
