Cagliari's young French striker, Yael Trepy, is in critical condition in intensive care after nearly drowning in a villa pool on the Costa Smeralda on Sunday. The news was confirmed on Monday morning by the club itself via an official statement.
According to the reconstruction of events reported by ANSA, the 20-year-old footballer fell into the deeper end of the pool at around 6 p.m. Trepy reportedly got into difficulty because, according to available information, he cannot swim.
After being pulled from the water, emergency services intervened due to the severity of the situation. The player was intubated and airlifted by helicopter to the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari, where he was placed in the intensive care unit.
Cagliari Calcio released an official statement, as reported by Corriere della Sera, confirming that their player is hospitalized: "Cagliari Calcio announces that footballer Yael Trepy is currently admitted to the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care."
The statement further notes that the club is in constant contact with the medical facility and the player's family, and is closely monitoring the evolution of his condition. The club also requested respect for the family's privacy and announced that it will release further information as it becomes available.
Trepy made his Serie A debut last season for Cagliari, scoring an equalizer in the final moments of a match against Cremonese. On Friday, just a day before the incident, he started in the Italian Cup match in which Cagliari defeated Arezzo.
