Yael Trepy, the 20-year-old Cagliari forward, has woken from the pharmacological coma he was placed in after he began drowning in a pool on Sunday. According to the latest bulletin from the Aou di Sassari hospital, the player has been extubated and currently shows no evident neurological damage, ANSA reports.
Awakening after 48 hours
Trepy was hospitalized at the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari following the incident that occurred on August 16, 2026, in a pool at a villa on the Costa Smeralda. After approximately 48 hours of pharmacological coma, the medical team suspended the neuromuscular block and gradually reduced sedation, while also decreasing ventilatory support.
"Maintaining optimal respiratory exchange allowed for the cessation of mechanical ventilation, and the patient was extubated in the afternoon," explained Stefania Milia, director of the Emergency Intensive Care Unit at the Santissima Annunziata hospital.
State of consciousness and further prognosis
According to the bulletin reported by ANSA, after waking, the patient showed a full recovery of consciousness: he is awake, cooperative, and, as stated, "currently shows no evident neurological damage." His respiratory and hemodynamic status is described as stable.
However, sources differ on the exact current condition. While ANSA reports awakening and extubation, La Repubblica states in its bulletin that Trepy is "still pharmacologically sedated and artificially ventilated via intubation," noting that respiratory function is improving compared to the severe insufficiency recorded on admission. According to that version, the player has no fever and continues with antibiotic therapy and microbiological tests, while cardiovascular function is stable.
Due to the recent extubation and the pulmonary condition caused by aspiration syndrome, Trepy remains in intensive care under strict clinical and respiratory monitoring. The prognosis remains reserved.
Support from coach and club
While the young Frenchman recovers, he is receiving support from teammates, the coaching staff, the club, and fans. Coach Fabio Pisacane posted an emotional message on social media: "For four years I've watched you grow, fight, and overcome every obstacle. Today you play the most important match: keep fighting, Yael. As always, I'm with you, waiting for you."
