Natura Jadera has launched a project to remove invasive turtles from wetland habitats in Zadar County. The project, titled "Remove the Wild One So the Pond Stays Cool," aims to reduce the population of Trachemys turtles, protect native species, and preserve wetland habitats.
Citizens who come across a turtle in Zadar County suspected to belong to the Trachemys genus, such as the red-eared or yellow-bellied slider, have been given clear instructions. They must not release such an individual into another body of water or relocate it to a different location.
If the turtle is found out of water, it should not be returned to the wild. It is recommended to take a photo of the individual if possible, note the exact location of the find, and contact the project leader.
Anđela Višić, the project leader, is in charge of receiving reports. Citizens can contact her at 095 344 9841. When reporting, it is advisable to provide the location of the find, the date and time of the sighting, and the number of observed individuals, and if possible, send a photo as well.
Natura Jadera specifically asks citizens not to attempt to remove or relocate turtles from the wild on their own. After receiving a report, the project leader will assess the situation and, if necessary, arrange a field visit and further action in accordance with project activities and applicable regulations.
The project also includes establishing a system for reporting, removing, and managing invasive individuals, and the organization thanks citizens for their cooperation and contribution to preserving the nature of Zadar County.
