The Croatian klapa Metaklapa has been bridging the seemingly incompatible for years: traditional klapa singing and the heavy metal of legends Iron Maiden. Their blend has delighted audiences worldwide, with special recognition coming from Steve Harris himself, one of the founders of the iconic band.

Why Iron Maiden?

Davor Capković, a member of Metaklapa, explained to 24sata that the choice of Iron Maiden songs was natural. "Metal is a genre of music that is extremely melodic, and Iron Maiden's vocalist has an incredible vocal range, which is why they naturally fit into klapa harmonization," he said.

He added that klapa singing is a harmonic melody where the leading lines usually fit into the first and second tenor. "So it seemed to us that their songs would be the most suitable," Capković explained.

Encounter with Harris Remains a Special Memory

One of the most striking moments for Metaklapa members was performing in front of Steve Harris. Capković admits that performance may not have been their best, but he describes the encounter with Harris as a special experience.

"Well, it wasn't our most polished or best performance, but they are all such good and approachable people that they would have told us we were great even if we had been at our worst. But that man is so kind; you could really see that he liked what we do," Capković recounted.

Harris later approached him at the bar and admitted that he had heard numerous covers of Iron Maiden, but that what Metaklapa does is "truly something special."

Fourth Wacken and Future Plans

This year, Metaklapa performed at the Wacken festival for the fourth time, one of the largest metal festivals in the world. "We had a fantastic time, both on stage and later socializing with people," Metaklapa revealed.

During a recent trip through South America, a choral singing theory expert approached them and said he had also tried to create similar arrangements but didn't understand why Metaklapa has such a good and unique sound. Capković explained that it's not just an a cappella cover but klapa singing, which has several styles.

For autumn, they are planning a collaboration with a local band, but they are keeping details under wraps for now. They have already had the opportunity to work with the Zagreb Philharmonic and Manntra. They also plan a performance in Zagreb and, in early 2027, a third mini-tour of Germany.
