Several unidentified drones were spotted above a German armed forces (Bundeswehr) base in Mechernich, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which houses a large storage facility for weapons and spare parts, as well as a repair workshop for Patriot air defense systems. The incident, which occurred on the night of Thursday to Friday, August 7, 2026, raised alarm and triggered a comprehensive investigation.
According to a report by the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, citing a confidential police report, employees of a private security company documented as many as six drone flights between Thursday evening and Friday morning and immediately notified the police. Another source, the newspaper Die Zeit, reports that two unidentified drones were spotted above the base around 10 p.m. on Thursday, which was also confirmed by the Bundeswehr Operations Command, stating that at least two aircraft were observed.
Police officers who arrived at the scene early Friday morning also spotted a large drone briefly circling above the facility. The military police suspect it was a Fly-380 VTOL model, an aircraft with a wingspan of up to 3.80 meters, a maximum speed of 150 km/h, and a range of approximately 400 kilometers. Due to such characteristics, investigators rule out the possibility that it was a drone for routine tasks, such as topographic surveys, that accidentally strayed over the military area during the night.
The identity of those responsible for these flights is currently unknown. The case has been opened under suspicion of unauthorized surveillance of military installations, and the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) and the Joint Drone Defense Center based in Berlin are involved in the investigation.
The base in Mechernich is of strategic importance. Sueddeutsche Zeitung notes that the site is colloquially referred to as the "Patriot shipyard," and the storage facility covers approximately 30,000 square meters. In addition to storing weapons, repairs of Patriot air defense systems, crucial for protecting airspace, are also carried out there.
This incident comes shortly after a similar drone-related disruption was recorded at Leipzig airport, further heightening concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in Germany. The investigation is ongoing, and details about the origin and intent of the aircraft remain unknown.
