Santos beat Vasco da Gama 3-0, and the captain had to leave the pitch for a minute due to time-wasting.
Santos defeated Vasco da Gama 3-0 in the 23rd round of the Brazilian league at São Januário, and the match also brought a precedent in world football. Visiting captain Neymar became the first high-profile victim of the new anti-time-wasting rule that came into effect this week in the Brazilian league.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Neymar played the full match and delivered a strong performance, contributing to two of his team's three goals. Santos secured the win in the closing stages: Gabriel Barbosa "Gabigol" scored in the 68th minute, Willian Arão in the 77th, and Luan Peres four minutes later.
For the second goal, Neymar delivered a cross that goalkeeper Léo Jardim failed to clear, and for the third, he fired a powerful free kick that fell to Peres. Vasco completely collapsed in the final minutes, and fans whistled their goalkeeper after the final whistle.
The incident occurred when Santos goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão received medical attention on the pitch. The referee deemed it a time-wasting tactic and decided to punish Neymar as team captain, ordering him to leave the field for one minute before being allowed to return.
Under the new rule, if play is stopped due to a goalkeeper injury, the coach must designate a player to leave the pitch and remain off it for at least one minute after play resumes. If the coach fails to designate a player within 10 seconds of medical staff entering, the captain automatically leaves the field.
The rule includes exceptions: goalkeeper injuries caused by a foul that requires a free kick and immediate attention, collisions between the goalkeeper and an outfield player requiring treatment for both, and cases of goalkeeper bleeding.
The win gave Santos 25 points from 23 matches and a temporary escape from the relegation zone, depending on other results in the round. The team is on a positive run, having reached the quarterfinals of the Brazilian Cup and beaten Ecuador's Macará in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16.
