Two drones were spotted on Thursday evening (August 6, 2026) above a military base in Mechernich, near Bonn, immediately triggering a security alert. The German armed forces (Bundeswehr) confirmed the incident and dispatched military police to the site, after which the case was handed over to local authorities for further investigation. According to German media reports, the complex is used to store equipment and spare parts for the maintenance of American Patriot air defense systems.
This event came just days after a drone with explosives was found on the runway of Leipzig/Halle airport. The airport is used by NATO, the German military, and the Ukrainian airline Antonov Airlines. It has not yet been confirmed whether the cases in Leipzig and Mechernich are linked in any way, but the close timing of the two incidents has further heightened concern among German security services.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told the Bild newspaper on Sunday (August 9, 2026) that Germany has become a regular target of attempts at destabilization. "We are not at war, but we are a daily target of hybrid warfare," Dobrindt said, alluding to threats such as sabotage, cyberattacks, espionage, and unauthorized overflights of military installations. Patriot systems are crucial for Ukraine's defense against Russian ballistic missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week again called on allies for additional supplies of missiles, warning that his country is running out of interceptors needed to protect cities and infrastructure. U.S. President Donald Trump offered Ukraine a license to produce Patriots in early July 2026, but last week denied the existence of such an agreement.
A series of similar drone sightings in European airspace over the past year has raised the level of alert across the continent. The European Union has already discussed creating a connected network of sensors, jammers, and air defense systems-a sort of "drone wall." Some European officials have previously blamed Russia for such incidents, but Moscow has consistently dismissed these claims as absurd. German authorities have so far not publicly linked Moscow to the events in Mechernich or Leipzig.
