Russian ballistic missiles and drones once again targeted the Ukrainian capital and its surroundings. Three people, including a child, were killed in the attack on the Brovary district, while fires spread across Kyiv.
A series of powerful explosions echoed through Kyiv on the night of Friday to Saturday, August 8, 2026, as Russian forces launched a new wave of attacks with ballistic missiles and drones on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding areas. Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed that three people, including a child, were killed in the attack on the Brovary district.
According to reports from the Ukrainian media outlet Kyiv Independent, the first explosions in the capital were heard around 12:45 a.m. local time. Less than 15 minutes later, another series of detonations shook the city. Around 3 a.m., as emergency services were already extinguishing fires in the affected suburb of Brovary, journalists reported additional explosions, with warnings that ballistic missiles were striking the capital.
In Brovary, a suburb east of Kyiv, three people were injured, including another child. The attack damaged a residential building, cars, and auxiliary structures, and a fire broke out in a non-residential building. Emergency crews are still working at the affected sites. "Russia continues to terrorize the civilian population," Tkachenko stated.
Meanwhile, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) reported fires in two separate garages and one commercial building in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv. Another fire was extinguished at a business premises in the Obolonskyi district. Explosions were also reported in Dnipro, the country's fourth-largest city.
The attacks come at a time when Ukraine's air defense is facing a severe shortage of interceptor missiles for Western systems like the Patriot. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense announced on August 7, 2026, that during July it managed to intercept only 29 of the 195 ballistic missiles Russia fired at the country. This statistic gains weight in light of the massive attack on August 5, 2026, when 24 ballistic and four hypersonic missiles were fired at Kyiv and its surroundings. None of them were intercepted, resulting in the deaths of 17 people and nearly 30 wounded.
The latest attack on Brovary comes as the local population is still recovering from one of the most intense Russian bombardments of the area since the start of the war, when eight people were killed at a railway station. Ukraine's Air Force warned that during the night, Russian drones and guided aerial bombs were also directed at other parts of the country. The full extent of material damage and the final death toll are not yet known, and attacks are ongoing.
