The nighttime peace in Laurenčićeva Street in Zagreb was disrupted by an attempted scooter theft, which was foiled by a vigilant local resident. Four men allegedly tried to steal a scooter parked in front of a building, but were interrupted by a man walking his dog at the time, after which they fled.
A post about the incident appeared on social media and quickly alarmed the local community. "Dear neighbors, last night there was an attempted scooter theft in front of the building at Laurenčićeva 8. They tried to cut the chain securing the scooter. A man with a dog came by and the four thieves ran off," reads the post, whose author explained that there is no detailed description of the perpetrators yet, as it all happened during the night.
The scooter belongs to his neighbor and was parked next to his motorcycle. The author of the post added that more information might be known after the scooter's owner speaks with the man who prevented the theft by walking his dog.
The post quickly sparked a series of reactions, with several citizens claiming this is not the first such event. Scooter thefts in the Borovje area, they say, have been going on for some time. "It's the same crew doing this; the police know and can't do anything about it. They've been given full names, addresses, camera footage, and a description of the van," one resident complained in the comments. He added that he had managed to recover his own scooter twice, but it was damaged both times.
Another Zagreb resident shared a similar experience, claiming his scooter was stolen, but the perpetrators abandoned it after about 150 meters because they couldn't start it. The damage to the vehicle, he says, amounted to 400 to 500 euros. "The same night, the same thing happened to my friends a few kilometers away," he wrote in a comment on the post.
From the comments of frustrated citizens, it appears they believe the police are aware of the problem, but it continues to recur. There is currently no official information on whether this latest theft attempt has been reported to the authorities.
