Residents of Kvarner were jolted from their sleep last night by an earthquake that, although brief, was strong enough to cause alarm. The Seismological Service of the Republic of Croatia recorded the ground shaking at 1:20 AM on August 7, 2026.
The epicenter was located 11 kilometers southeast of Novi Vinodolski. The magnitude was 3.5 on the Richter scale, while the intensity at the epicenter was estimated at IV-V on the EMS scale.
The tremor was felt in several places across the region. In addition to Novi Vinodolski, residents of Crikvenica, Selce, Krk, Senj, and other surrounding settlements also reported the shaking. Within just a few hours, several hundred comments were left on the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) platform.
Although there are no reports of material damage, residents' experiences were vivid. "I jumped out of bed," one resident described for Dnevno.hr. Others reported "two deep jolts" on EMSC, while some summed up their impression with the words: "It shook well."
Some felt "a jolt with a rumble followed by shaking," and the prevailing feeling was that it was "very unpleasant." One comment that best describes last night's event reads: "Short but strong."
