Lando Norris secured his first win of the 2026 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli, while Oscar Piastri, who looked like a potential winner for much of the race, had to retire on lap 57 due to a gearbox failure. Norris's triumph came only in his 11th outing as the reigning champion, and McLaren had to mix feelings of celebration and disappointment.
Norris started the race from pole position, but Oscar Piastri reacted brilliantly to the lights going out and had already taken the lead by turn three. The two McLarens quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack, but Norris spent much of the first stint in DRS range behind his teammate, unable to find an overtaking opportunity on a track notoriously difficult for passing. Drama peaked on lap 57 when Piastri had to park his car at the side of the track due to a gearbox failure and retire from the race. The deployment of the Virtual Safety Car completely turned the final phase upside down. Norris retained the lead after pitting, Verstappen rose to second place, while Hamilton dropped to third but with significantly fresher tires than the drivers ahead. The stewards then decided that Hamilton had to give the position back to Antonelli because he had illegally overtaken him while exiting the pits under the Virtual Safety Car, and Hamilton also earned a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
In the closing laps, Norris calmly managed the situation at the front and brought the race to a winning finish without major difficulties. Verstappen finished second, and young Italian Antonelli took third, which also helped him maintain the lead in the drivers' championship. Hamilton and Russell remained fifth and seventh in the overall standings, while George Russell, who had a disastrous start from sixth place dropping to the back, experienced one of his toughest Sundays of the season.
For McLaren, this race brought mixed emotions. Norris's victory, his first of the 2026 season and only in 11 attempts, is certainly a reason to celebrate, but Piastri's retirement reminded the team how thin the line between triumph and disappointment is in Formula 1. Piastri looked like the man in control for much of the race, and the gearbox failure at a time when the race was in its final phase represents a bitter experience for the Australian. The Hungaroring once again confirmed its reputation as a track where strategy and unforeseen events can completely change the outcome, and this race will be remembered as one of the more dramatic results of the season.
