The Latin saying "Per aspera ad astra," or "through thorns to the stars," rarely gets as literal a meaning as in the career of Promise David. This 25-year-old Canadian started in Zagreb's Trnje neighborhood, and now he will play in the English Premier League. Brighton & Hove Albion has brought him in on a one-year loan from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, with an obligation to buy for €26 million if agreed conditions are met.
David was in Croatia from 2019 to 2021, playing for Zagreb's Trnje in the then-third tier Central League. He joined that neighborhood club from Canada's Vaughan Azzurri. After his Croatian stint, he returned across the Atlantic, this time to the USA, and then via two Maltese clubs reached Estonia's Kalju. In Estonia, he scored 30 goals and added four assists in 44 senior appearances, which convinced Union Saint-Gilloise to pay €600,000 for him.
He spent the last two years in Belgium, and in his first season helped the club win its first league title in 90 years and secure a historic place in the Champions League group stage. For Union, he totaled 82 appearances, 41 goals, and nine assists.
At the international level, David has made 14 appearances for Canada, scoring four goals and providing one assist. At the World Cup, he played four matches, scored against Switzerland, and recorded his only international assist, against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At Brighton, he is expected to succeed legendary Danny Welbeck (35), who moved to Chelsea. There, he will also be teammates with Croatian international Luka Vušković, a young defender who is already a regular in the south coast side.
