The years-long silence in the Omiš city harbor will soon be broken. The largest historical reenactment on the Adriatic, the famous Omiš Pirate Battle, is officially making a grand comeback. Organizers have confirmed that the central summer spectacle will take place on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, starting in the evening hours, and the entire month of August will be marked by the return of the proud pirate tradition.
The event itself is based on a real historical event from 1221, when a dramatic battle took place in the Brač Channel in front of Omiš. According to historical records, Omiš pirates, led by the famous Duke Malduk, intercepted and completely defeated the powerful fleet of the Republic of Venice, which was under the command of Pope Honorius III and Venice.
The key to victory lay in tactics and technology. The people of Omiš used their distinctive, fast, and agile oared ships, known as Omiš arrows or sagittae. These ships had a shallow draft, allowing them to launch quick attacks and retreat just as quickly to the safety of the Cetina River estuary, where the heavy Venetian galleys could not follow. This magnificent victory forced the Venetians to sign a peace treaty and pay tribute in gold ducats to the Omiš princes of the Kačić family, thereby securing their right to free and safe navigation in that part of the Adriatic.
The Omiš Tourist Board emphasizes that admission to the battle reenactment itself, as well as to all accompanying concerts and events in the city, is completely free for all visitors. Given the multi-year hiatus and great interest, unprecedented crowds and special traffic arrangements are announced for August 18. Organizers therefore urge all those planning to come to arrive early to secure the best spots with a view of the Omiš harbor, where the main part of the spectacle will take place.
