Orešković: HDZ Has Occupied Croatia with Poison

At a press conference of the left opposition in Gospić, Dalija Orešković sharply criticized HDZ and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, called for early elections, and announced mass protests.
Dalija Orešković, a representative of the left opposition, launched a scathing attack on the ruling party and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković at a press conference ahead of the Environmental Protection Committee session in Gospić on August 17, 2026. In a particularly harsh speech, she accused HDZ of having "occupied with poison" Gospić, Lika, and all of Croatia, stating that no occupier in history had done such a thing.
Orešković commented on the expected reaction of Prime Minister Plenković to everything that would be heard at the Committee session. "To everything we will hear today in Gospić, at this session of the Environmental Protection Committee, Andrej Plenković will say that he has his 76 hands in Parliament and that his parliamentary majority is stable," Orešković said.
She then referred to the banners displayed at the press conference venue. "But here on these banners, the real truth about Andrej Plenković and HDZ is written. That is the real message: Lika has been turned into a crime scene. Let HDZ hear these whistles in their former stronghold; Lika will never be that again."
Orešković reserved her harshest accusations for comparing HDZ's policies to occupation. "It is HDZ that has occupied Gospić, Lika, and Croatia with poison. And is there truly a greater treason? Is there a greater crime than poisoning your own country and your own people in this way? No occupier has done this. When occupiers come, they want the land for themselves, to prosper on it, not to poison their own people and citizens."
She concluded that Croatia has no choice. "That is why Croatia has only one option: either we all get poisoned by HDZ's poison, or we cease to exist. There is no third way."
Orešković called on citizens to demand early elections. "Anyone who doesn't understand that is either networked with HDZ and has a guilty conscience, or simply doesn't care about Croatia's survival in this region. We demand early elections and a government that will make Croatia what its anthem describes: beautiful and ours. All citizens must take part in this."
If the situation does not change, she announced escalation. "If today is not a turning point, we will call on citizens to take to the streets in mass protests. Thank you," Orešković said.
