Osijek-Baranja County Builds €2.7 Million Mosquito Control Center

During the summer months, the mosquito problem in Osijek and its surroundings has been one of the most pressing topics for years. Although this summer, mainly due to the dry period, there have been almost no issues, Osijek-Baranja County is not waiting for a new crisis and is preparing a long-term solution. Construction of a unique Mosquito Control Center is currently underway.

MOSQUITOLAB Project Worth €2.7 Million

Work on the future Center, which is being built next to the existing facility of the Osijek-Baranja County Health Center, began in February 2026. Currently, the second floor of the building is under construction, and the total value of the project, named MOSQUITOLAB, amounts to €2.7 million. The completion of construction work is expected within the next year.

County Prefect Nataša Tramišak emphasized the importance of this project for the entire region. "Osijek and Osijek-Baranja County will get a unique laboratory and Center that will deal with suppressing mosquito infestations, controlling invasive species, and preventing this unpleasant phenomenon that affects not only public health but also the economy, tourism, and the quality of life of citizens," Tramišak stated for Regionalni.hr.

Three Laboratories and Modern SIT Method

After construction, the equipment phase will follow, and the Center is expected to start operating by the end of 2027 or the beginning of 2028. It will house three laboratories dedicated to detecting viruses and infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, identifying invasive species, and sterilizing mosquitoes using the modern SIT method. Special focus will be on controlling floodwater mosquitoes, which have been one of the biggest problems in the Osijek area in recent years.

International Cooperation and Scientific Role

The Center will not only have a practical role in pest control but also a scientific and research one. Plans include collaboration with institutions from Europe, including those from Hungary, Italy, and Austria. The MOSQUITOLAB project is being implemented within the Interreg cross-border cooperation program Hungary, Croatia for the period from 2021 to 2027.
