The Umaš police have recorded, in just two days, August 10 and 11, 2026, three separate theft cases in which a total of five bicycles disappeared, four of which were electric. According to the Istrian Police Department, the value of this property is measured in thousands of euros.

Nighttime Theft of Four E-Bikes

The most serious single case occurred during the night between August 10 and 11 in the Mareda area, where an unknown perpetrator, or perpetrators, stole four electric bicycles in one go. The targets were a 56-year-old German citizen, who lost two bicycles, and a 45-year-old Slovenian citizen, whose two e-bikes also disappeared. The individual value of each of these two-wheelers is estimated at several thousand euros.

Novigrad the Following Day

The series continued on August 11, when a bicycle belonging to a 47-year-old man was stolen on Carl Grisi Street in Novigrad. Here too, the material damage reaches thousands of euros, and police officers are conducting intensive criminal investigations to find the perpetrators and the missing bicycles.

Summer Wave of Thefts

Monitoring the security situation, the Istrian Police Department notes, shows a clear trend, the number of bicycle thefts rises precisely during the summer months. Favorable weather conditions encourage more citizens and tourists to use them as a primary means of transport, but basic self-protection measures are regularly neglected.

Therefore, the police have issued a series of concrete tips for prevention and easier recovery of stolen bicycles:

Take a photo of your bicycle and note the frame number. Always lock it to a solid metal object, never just the wheel, and in campsites leave it in secured areas or near the reception. On beaches and streets, keep your bicycle under supervision at all times, and in yards, store it in a locked garage or a well-lit area not visible from the street.
