A five-kilometer queue on the A3 motorway, single-lane traffic through the Brezik tunnel on the A1, and driving at a 40 km/h speed limit on the A4-this was the picture of Croatian motorways painted by the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Several traffic accidents, coupled with ongoing roadworks on key sections, turned travel into hours of patience.
The most severe situation was recorded on the A3 Bregana-Lipovac motorway, where an accident at the 16.+100 km mark in the direction of Bregana cut off the road between the Lučko and Zagreb West interchanges. The result is a queue approximately five kilometers long, with vehicles moving through only one lane.
Meanwhile, on the A1 Zagreb-Ploče-Karamatići motorway in the Brezik tunnel-towards Zagreb-traffic is also reduced to one lane, while HAK notes increased traffic density between Zagreb and Zadar in both directions. The situation is no better on the A4 Goričan-Zagreb: between the Novi Marof and Breznički Hum interchanges, at the 47.+650 km mark in the direction of Zagreb, traffic is restricted to one lane with a speed limit of 40 km/h.
Adding to the unexpected incidents are planned roadworks that have been ongoing for days and weeks. On the Istrian Y (A8/A9), traffic is slow between the Učka tunnel and the Matulji interchange in both directions, while on the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway, restrictions are in place on two sections. In the direction of Macelj, from the 17.+500 to 13.+750 km mark on the Krapina-Đurmanec section, and towards Zagreb, from the 6.+700 to 8.+200 km mark on the Trakošćan-Đurmanec section, only the driving lane is open.
Longer-term roadworks also mark the A3. Until September 1, 2026, drainage repair is underway on the section between the Popovača and Kutina interchanges, from the 90.+700 to 93.+800 km mark in the direction of Lipovac-traffic runs in two narrowed lanes, and HAK warns of possible delays, especially on Fridays. Additionally, until October 3, 2026, roadworks continue between the Sveta Nedelja and Zagreb West interchanges, where traffic is bidirectional in two narrowed lanes.
According to HAK's forecast for Tuesday, August 12, 2026, delays will not significantly ease. Due to the bura wind on the Adriatic, restrictions may be imposed on certain vehicle groups, particularly on the Adriatic Highway in the Podvelebit area, while slowdowns are expected on city roads and bypasses during the morning and afternoon.
A breakdown is particularly anticipated on the Zagreb bypass (A3) and the Rijeka bypass (A7), on the A2 Zagreb-Macelj motorway near the Zagreb West interchange, and on the A3 between the Sveta Nedelja and Zagreb West interchanges. Increased traffic is also expected on roads towards the coast, with occasional possible delays in tunnel zones, rest areas, and toll plazas. HAK reminds all drivers to maintain a safe following distance and to form an emergency corridor in case of a standstill-especially since the stormy wind also threatens difficulties in maritime traffic.
