Drunk and on Drugs Drove into Canal in Darda: Penalties Piling Up

The Osijek-Baranja Police Department reported on Monday about a traffic accident caused by a 21-year-old driver on Friday, August 14, 2026, at around 1:20 PM in Darda. In St. John the Baptist Street, the young man first hit the embankment with his car, then the concrete curb of a driveway, after which he partially drove along the drainage canal and partially along the grassy embankment.
According to the police report, the driver then struck the concrete part of another driveway with the front of his vehicle. No one was injured in this incident.
The police measured 1.50 per mille of alcohol in the driver's blood, and a preliminary drug test was positive for an illicit substance. The driver then refused a medical examination, i.e., blood and urine sampling for analysis, and was consequently placed in a special police holding area until the effects of the intoxicating substance wore off.
"The driver was found to have a blood alcohol level of 1.50 per mille. The driver was preliminarily tested for drugs in his system, during which he tested positive for an illicit substance, after which he refused a medical examination, i.e., blood and urine sampling for analysis. Due to all of the above, the young driver was placed in a special police holding area until the effects of the intoxicating substance wore off," the Osijek-Baranja Police Department stated.
During the investigation, the driver voluntarily handed over to the police a small PVC bag with a zipper that contained drugs.
For causing the traffic accident, the driver faces a fine of 160 euros, and an additional 30 euros for failing to present his driver's license. For driving under the influence of alcohol, he was fined 660 euros, given a three-month driving ban for B-category vehicles, and four negative points.
For refusing a professional medical examination, he faces a fine of 1,320 euros, a three-month driving ban, and six negative points.
A misdemeanor charge will be filed against the 21-year-old with the Municipal Court in Osijek, Permanent Service in Beli Manastir, for violations under the Law on Combating Drug Abuse, with a proposal to impose a fine of 660 euros.
