In the early hours of August 19, police sirens echoed through Makarska for over four hours as officers pursued a 23-year-old driver from France who committed 18 traffic violations in a single night. After being arrested and brought before the court, he was ordered to be detained for 14 days.
The officers issued an order for the young man to stop his vehicle, but he ignored it and continued driving in an attempt to escape. He was caught and stopped after 10 minutes, and to prevent further flight, coercive measures were used. He was then arrested and taken to the police station.
Checks revealed that he was driving without a valid driver's license and under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level of 1.52 per mille.
During his reckless driving, he drove in the wrong direction twice, caused his tires to screech several times, and ran through four intersections while the traffic light was red. Additionally, he failed to use his turn signals, made sudden turns, and did not check whether he could do so without endangering other road users.
In an expedited procedure, he was taken to court, where the police proposed a 30-day prison sentence, a fine of 3,170 euros, and a ban on using his foreign driver's license in Croatia.
The court, considering that the defendant was charged with 18 socially dangerous offenses, concluded that detention was the only adequate measure to prevent the repetition of offenses, so he was remanded to prison.
