Wednesday, August 12, 2026, brought two separate incidents on Croatian roads that once again highlight the dangers of drunk driving. In Podravina, a 30-year-old ended up in the metal railing of a bridge, while in Slavonia, a 24-year-old driver caused two traffic accidents in just a few minutes.

Podravina: Veered Off the Road and Hit Bridge Railing

As ePodravina reports, the incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Stjepan Radić Street in Šemovci, a settlement belonging to the Virje municipality. The 30-year-old, driving a passenger car with Bjelovar license plates, had 1.40 per mille of alcohol in his blood.

Due to improper movement off the roadway, the vehicle struck the metal railing of a bridge. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident.

The police arrested the driver and brought him before the competent misdemeanor court the same day. In an expedited procedure, he was fined 1,170 euros and given a protective measure banning him from driving B-category motor vehicles for three months, as confirmed by the police administration.

Slavonia: Caused a Collision, Fled, Then Ended Up in a Ditch

About an hour later, around 7 a.m., an even more serious case occurred in Selci Đakovački. According to reports from Danica, as carried by Krapinsko-Zagorski, a 24-year-old driver on Vladimira Nazor Street failed to maintain a safe distance and rear-ended the vehicle in front of him.

Instead of stopping, the young man fled the scene. The escape was short-lived: on the road between Selci Đakovački and Kondrić, due to excessive speed in a curve, he lost control and ended up in a ditch. He sustained minor injuries in the process.

Police officers measured his blood alcohol concentration at a staggering 1.76 per mille, according to the Osijek-Baranja police.

Three Fines and Nine Months Without a License

The young driver will face three fines: 160 euros for the first accident, 390 euros for the second, and 1,320 euros for drunk driving. The total amount comes to 1,870 euros.

In addition, he was issued two driving bans for B-category vehicles. The first lasts three months and carries six negative penalty points, while the second lasts six months with an additional three points. In total, he will be without a driver's license for nine months.
