Zagreb police had their hands full over the past weekend due to drivers who got behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. In three separate cases, which occurred in the early morning hours, high blood alcohol concentrations were recorded, and all cases ended in arrests and court-imposed fines.

Young Man Ends Up on Tram Tracks

The most dramatic incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at around 5:10 AM in the Trešnjevka area. According to information from Jutarnji list, a 23-year-old driver was operating a passenger vehicle with Zagreb license plates on Savska Road with a blood alcohol level of 1.46 g/kg. The driver passed a traffic sign for rerouting traffic and, instead of staying in his lane, turned into the lane designated for public transport vehicles. Due to excessive speed, he lost control and drove into a ditch on the roadway, specifically onto the tram tracks, causing material damage.

The driver was arrested and held in a special room until the effects of alcohol wore off, after which he was brought before the Municipal Misdemeanor Court in Zagreb. Zagreb police proposed a fine of 2,310 euros and a two-month driving ban for B-category vehicles. The court found him guilty but halved the penalty, imposing a fine of 980 euros and a one-month driving ban.

Two Drives, Two Fines of 2,000 Euros Each

As reported by Večernji list, two similar cases occurred during the same weekend. The first took place at around 1:35 AM when police stopped a 52-year-old female driver on Nova Cesta in Trešnjevka. A breathalyzer test revealed she had 1.67 per mille of alcohol in her system. After arrest and detention, she was brought before the Municipal Misdemeanor Court in Zagreb. Although police proposed a fine of 2,650 euros and a six-month driving ban, the court fined her 2,000 euros and imposed a three-month driving ban for B-category vehicles.

Just half an hour later, at around 2:05 AM, a 36-year-old male driver was stopped on the Jadranski Bridge heading north. He was driving with a blood alcohol level of 2.06 per mille. After arrest, he was taken to the Municipal Court in Novi Zagreb. As in the previous case, the police proposed a fine of 2,650 euros and a six-month driving ban, but the court imposed a fine of 2,000 euros and a two-month driving ban.
