In the midst of the peak tourist season, while the Adriatic teems with domestic and foreign tourists, a debate broke out on the social network Reddit that divided many. One user was taken aback by the state of an apartment for which he had paid €100 per night and asked the community whether it was usual for seaside accommodation to lack a dishwasher and a washing machine.
The user described a situation where his sister started cleaning up after dinner and then wanted to wash some clothes. When she asked the owner, she got an answer that left him stunned. "You know, we have 20 apartments, so we can't get machines for all of them. €100-200 a night, and you can't spend €500-1000 on two machines that will last at least 5 to 10 years," he recounted the owner's words.
Confused by the whole situation, the user wondered why guests don't criticize such apartments in reviews. He also added a personal anecdote: "My aunt has apartments, and all of them have all the appliances, of course. She herself says, 'People didn't come here to do laundry.' Is this common and normal? Or are my family, my friends, and I the odd ones out for finding it strange?"
The community's responses were anything but unanimous. Some users considered the absence of these appliances perfectly acceptable. "Yes, it's normal for a seaside apartment not to have a washing machine or dishwasher," read one comment. Others emphasized a practical approach to vacation: "When we go on holiday, we don't cook or do laundry. As for washing, swim trunks and swimsuits, yes, we hand-wash those quickly. For the rest, we brought vacation clothes and take dirty ones home."
On the other hand, many believe a washing machine is essential. "A washing machine should definitely be in every apartment. I don't even have a dishwasher at home, so honestly, I don't expect to find one when I go somewhere, nor do I miss it," wrote one user. Another chimed in with an even harsher stance: "That should be one of the main advantages of apartments over hotels. What's next, no stove and fridge?"
Some shared their own positive experiences, refuting the notion that this is the rule: "It's not 'normal' or usual for an apartment to have none of the above because I'm currently in one that has both a washer and a dishwasher." Most, however, agreed that it's crucial to check amenities in advance. "A lot of apartments don't have them; you have to check in advance whether they do or not, if it matters to you. Most people hand-wash dishes and don't do laundry while at the seaside," one comment read.
Rental prices for apartments on the Croatian coast during the summer season generally range from €50 to €150 per night for accommodation sleeping two to four people. Smaller or more remote apartments away from the coast can be found for €40 to €60. On the other hand, more luxurious units, properties in the first row by the sea, or accommodation in top destinations like Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Rovinj often exceed €200 to over €350 per night.
The debate once again showed how much guest expectations vary and how, amid a sea of diverse offerings, a detailed check of conditions before booking has become an indispensable part of summer vacation planning.
