Croatia's under-16 women's basketball team has secured their place in the A Division of the EuroBasket for cadettes. In the placement round for 9th to 16th place, they defeated Bulgaria with a convincing 96:60.
After finishing third in their group with one win and two losses, and a defeat at the start of the knockout stage against Turkey, the team led by head coach Alma Majstorović got the chance to save their elite status. They seized it in the best possible way.
The best performance for Croatia came from Marta Sučić, a member of the Žana Lelas Basketball Academy, with 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. She was followed by two players from Dubrovnik's Ragusa.
Nika Koprivica, one of four Ragusa representatives in the national team, scored 22 points along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal, and a block. Pia Petra Pivić from Osijek's Mursa also reached double figures with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
Mara Koncul, another Dubrovnik player, didn't shine on offense but played a key defensive role. She scored 5 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and recorded an impressive 10 steals. Petra Jerkić, the third Ragusa player to appear against Bulgaria, added 5 points, a rebound, and a steal.
Barbara Skaramuca missed the game due to injury.
Croatia now faces a placement round for 9th to 12th place. Their opponent on Friday, August 21, is Poland. With a win, the cadettes will play for ninth place; with a loss, they'll compete for eleventh.
Bulgaria, on the other hand, has been relegated to the placement round for 13th to 16th place, fighting to stay in Division A-a fate Croatia avoided with their convincing victory.
