The program on the first day of the alkar festivities in Sinj was disrupted on Friday, August 7, 2026, when a severe storm with heavy rain hit the town and the Cetina region. Due to the large amount of rainfall that fell on the Alkarsko Trkalište in a short period, the start of the competition for the Bara was postponed.
The storm hit the Sinj area at around 3:30 PM, as reported by Dalmacija News. For the safety of participants and the inability to smoothly conduct the knightly competition, organizers decided to postpone. It was expected that the competition could start after 6:30 PM, weather permitting.
The Bara, traditionally held before the Čoja and the main alkar race, is an iconic knightly game in Sinj and one of the most important events within the 311th Sinjska Alka. Organizers confirmed to Slobodna Dalmacija that holding the Bara is not a prerequisite for the main competition on Sunday, which is important information for all those eagerly awaiting the central event.
Despite the postponement, photos from the Alkarsko Trkalište, taken by photographer Nikola Vilić (Cropix), show a waterlogged track and a gloomy sky over Sinj. Organizers have stated that the Bara will be held as soon as conditions ensure the safety of the alkars and their horses.
Sinj and the Cetina region were hit by a severe storm accompanied by heavy rain, completely disrupting the planned schedule for the first day of the alkar festivities. Although many visitors were already on their feet and eagerly awaiting the start of the competition, organizers had to prioritize safety.
All eyes are on the sky, hoping it will calm down and allow the alkars to compete for the prestigious Bara. There is no new information yet on the exact start time of the competition.
