Paul Pogba, the 33-year-old French footballer, has suffered another heavy blow in a career that has been declining for years. During Monaco's training session in England today, he felt pain in his left thigh and left the pitch in tears in front of his teammates. Pogba has spent only 45 minutes on the pitch this preseason. He started training with the team at the end of last week, but now his recovery is once again in question. Last season, he played only six matches for Monaco, with numerous injuries causing him to miss most of the season.
Since 2019, while still wearing the Manchester United shirt, Pogba has been sidelined for more than 1,100 days. Over seven years, he has missed approximately 165 matches, averaging nearly 40 missed games per season over four years. It serves as a reminder of his drastic decline after the peak of his career at the 2018 World Cup, where he was a key player for the French national team.
Thiago Scuro, Monaco's general manager, had already made it clear that the club does not seriously count on him. "He can leave. The project with him has failed. I believe we must be honest with him," Scuro told Gazzetta dello Sport less than a month ago.
He also added that they would monitor his training every week, leaving the final decision on playing time to coach Filipe Luis. "We have the summer to understand what Paul's level will be," Scuro said. Now, the outcome of those words will largely depend on the results of medical tests.
Pogba's career stumbled after returning to Juventus. In August 2022, his brother Mathias claimed that Paul had hired a witch doctor to harm Kylian Mbappé. Two years later, Mathias Pogba was sentenced to one year in prison for extorting his brother. In that same year, 2024, Paul received a four-year ban from playing due to doping. The ban was later reduced, and he returned to the pitch in 2025, but new physical problems now threaten to make that return futile.
