Split's intervention police officers stopped a 23-year-old Croatian citizen on the night of August 1-2, 2026, and found an illegal pistol with a magazine and two rounds of ammunition in his car. The man was arrested and taken into custody, but despite the police's proposal for a 30-day jail sentence, the court released him.
According to police information reported by DalmacijaDanas, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at around 12:50 AM in the Split area. A search of the 23-year-old's vehicle revealed he possessed a pistol for which he had no appropriate permit. The weapon and ammunition were confiscated, and he was taken to the police station for criminal investigation.
The police reported that the man had previously been criminally charged for violent behavior and threats. The investigation showed there was reasonable suspicion that he had committed three misdemeanors under the Law on the Acquisition and Possession of Weapons by Citizens.
He was brought before the competent court with a misdemeanor charge, and the police requested that he be detained and sentenced to 30 days in prison. The court did not accept this proposal, and the 23-year-old was released.

According to police suspicions reported by Slobodna Dalmacija, the suspect threatened police officers with death and then physically assaulted one of them, attempting to prevent him from performing his official duties. The officer sustained minor injuries in the attack. Additionally, the criminal investigation revealed suspicion that the 44-year-old damaged a fence belonging to a company based in Novalja while trying to reach his vehicle, which had been previously moved due to illegal parking.
A criminal report will be filed against the suspect with the competent state attorney's office on suspicion of committing the criminal offenses of coercion against an official, threats, and damage to another's property.
