Police officers from the Perušić Traffic Police Station on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, stopped two drivers on the A1 motorway near Gospić for driving significantly over the speed limit. The first was driving at 218 kilometers per hour, and the second at 217 kilometers per hour, on a section where the limit is 130 kilometers per hour.
At 9:02 PM, on the section between the Gospić interchange and the Jadova rest area in the southbound direction, police stopped a 38-year-old Croatian citizen. He was driving a passenger car with Koprivnica license plates, and the speed measuring device recorded him at 218 kilometers per hour.
Just over two hours later, at 11:13 PM, police stopped a 42-year-old Austrian citizen on the same motorway, but in the northbound direction, between the Jadova rest area and the Gospić interchange. He was driving a passenger car with Austrian license plates, and his recorded speed was 217 kilometers per hour.
Both drivers were issued a mandatory misdemeanor citation and given a protective measure banning them from driving a B-category motor vehicle for one month, as reported by Novi list.
Police once again warned of the dangers of speeding, stating: "Excessive and inappropriate speed remains one of the main causes of casualties in traffic accidents, so adjust your speed to the current road conditions, while respecting legal regulations and considering the safety of all road users."
