In the evening hours of August 17, police officers from the Second Police Station in Rijeka stopped a passenger car with Ukrainian license plates on the A6 motorway near Čavle. In addition to the driver, other foreign nationals were found in the vehicle, raising suspicion of illegal transport.
The criminal investigation revealed that the 58-year-old Ukrainian national, as suspected, was transporting migrants for profit to a pre-arranged destination in Western Europe, for which she was to receive a monetary reward. The police determined that she acted with the aim of gaining unlawful financial gain.
After the investigation was completed, a criminal complaint was filed against the suspect with the competent state attorney's office on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of unlawful entry, movement, and residence in the Republic of Croatia, another European Union member state, or a signatory to the Schengen Agreement, as described in Article 326 of the Criminal Code. The suspect was then handed over to the detention supervisor.
Proceedings were conducted against the foreign nationals found in the vehicle in accordance with the provisions of the Act on International and Temporary Protection and the Aliens Act. The police did not disclose the exact number of persons transported, nor their nationalities, but it is known that there were several of them.
On the same day, in the morning hours, a 30-year-old Slovenian national was found on the island of Cres, for whom a search had been previously issued on suspicion of committing the same criminal offense. He is also connected to illegal migration, and the police conducted appropriate procedures in his case as well.
