The Zadar Police Department is actively searching for an unknown perpetrator who, during the night of August 3rd to 4th, 2026, removed and stole the flag of the Republic of Croatia from a memorial site in the village of Dobropoljci. The flag was taken from a metal pole, and although the material damage has not yet been determined, it is secondary to the act of vandalism itself, which has drawn significant attention.
This incident is part of a series of property crimes recorded by the Zadar police within just 48 hours. During the same period, two more serious thefts were reported on the island of Vir.
The first occurred on Wednesday, August 4th, when an unknown thief stole a wallet containing money and personal documents from the family home of a 54-year-old owner. The material damage is estimated at several hundred euros.
The following day, on August 5th at around 8 PM, another incident took place in Vir. An unknown perpetrator, in a particularly brazen manner, snatched a handbag from the hands of a 28-year-old Austrian woman on the street. The bag contained two mobile phones and a wallet with documents and money, with total damages amounting to several thousand euros.
The police will file criminal charges against all unknown perpetrators with the Municipal State Attorney's Office in Zadar. Intensive investigations are underway with the aim of identifying them.
In addition to these cases, 28 traffic accidents were recorded in the area of the Zadar Police Department during the same 48-hour period. In these accidents, three people sustained minor injuries, while the severity of injuries for three others has not yet been determined.
