Officers of the Border Police from Gračac have completed a criminal investigation against a 47-year-old Polish national suspected of illegally entering, moving, and residing in Croatia and other European Union or Schengen Area countries. This criminal offense is prescribed under Article 326 of the Criminal Code.
During the implementation of state border protection measures, police officers stopped a vehicle with Polish license plates in the Gračac area in the early morning hours of August 17, 2026. The driver was a 47-year-old man, and the van contained several foreign nationals suspected of having illegally entered Croatia.
Following the arrest, the investigation established that the suspect, acting on prior agreement and out of self-interest, was transporting the foreigners for a monetary fee to their final destination. At that time, police also found and seized 13 MDMA tablets, a drug commonly known as ecstasy.
Furthermore, it is suspected that the same individual, on August 13, 2026, also in the Gračac area, had previously transported foreign nationals who had illegally entered Croatia, facilitating their further illegal movement within the European Union, again on prior agreement and for profit.
Upon completion of the criminal investigation, a criminal complaint was filed against the Polish national with the competent prosecutor's office on suspicion of committing two criminal offenses. Additionally, a misdemeanor charge was filed against him under the Law on Combating Drug Abuse. The foreign nationals were processed in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Foreigners, as reported by the Zadar Police Department.
Meanwhile, a similar case was recorded in the Sisak-Moslavina Police Department, where police officers tasked with combating migrant smuggling prevented the smuggling of several foreign nationals who had illegally crossed the state border. A criminal investigation was conducted against a 38-year-old Hungarian national who was stopped on Sunday, August 16, in the evening hours in the Lekenik area while transporting foreign nationals. It was established that he, too, was transporting foreigners for profit and a pre-agreed sum of money to their final destination. After the investigation was completed, the suspect was handed over to the detention supervisor of the Sisak-Moslavina Police Department along with a criminal complaint, while the foreign nationals were processed in accordance with the Law on Foreigners, as reported on the portal Sisak.info.
