The Zagreb Police Department conducted the first part of an intensified traffic surveillance operation on the night of August 7-8, 2026, and the results are alarming. In just one night, a total of 446 traffic violations were recorded, indicating a serious problem of irresponsible behavior behind the wheel.
The operation, named 'Activities to Halt the Adverse Trend in Road Traffic Safety,' revealed that speeding is by far the most common offense. Of the total violations, 199 were for speeding. Additionally, officers recorded 58 cases of not wearing a seatbelt and 28 drivers who improperly used their mobile phones while driving. The remaining 109 violations were for other breaches of traffic regulations.
Particularly concerning is the data on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. 52 individuals were removed from traffic, of which 50 were for alcohol and two for drugs. The night's record holder was a 47-year-old driver stopped in the Novi Zagreb area, who registered a blood alcohol concentration of 2.11 grams per kilogram.
In Trešnjevka, a 30-year-old driver measured 2.03 grams per kilogram, while a 46-year-old in the Zaprešić and Novi Zagreb areas had 1.81 grams of alcohol per kilogram. All three values significantly increase the risk of causing a traffic accident with the most severe consequences.
The Zagreb Police Department stated that this is only the first part of a preventive-repressive operation targeting the riskiest behaviors. The goal is to deter drivers from actions that directly endanger lives through sanctions. 'We call on all road users to respect traffic regulations. Irresponsible behavior not only endangers your own safety but also the lives of passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and others on the road at that moment,' the police said.
