In a weekend operation across the Zagreb Police Department, most drivers were fined for speeding, with the weekend's dubious record holder being a 32-year-old caught in Trešnjevka with 2.21 per mille blood alcohol.
Zagreb traffic police had their hands full over the past weekend. During two nights of intensified surveillance, from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday, officers recorded a total of 897 traffic violations. The operation aimed to crack down on the most serious traffic offenses that directly threaten the safety of all road users.
The most drastic case of drunk driving was recorded on the night from Saturday to Sunday in the Trešnjevka area. There, a 32-year-old driver was stopped, and a breathalyzer test measured a blood alcohol concentration of 2.21 per mille. That same night, in Novi Zagreb, police also stopped a 36-year-old with 2.10 per mille.
The previous night was not without drunk drivers behind the wheel either. Then, the record was held by a 47-year-old stopped in the Novi Zagreb area with 2.11 per mille. In Trešnjevka, a 30-year-old was caught with 2.03 per mille, and in the wider Zaprešić and Novi Zagreb area, a 46-year-old was measured at 1.81 per mille. During the first night of the operation, two individuals were removed from traffic for driving under the influence of drugs.
When all violations from both nights are tallied, speeding is by far the most common. Of the total 897 violations, 405 were for excessive speed. The first night saw 199 such cases, and the second 206. A total of 121 drivers were removed from traffic due to alcohol.
Concerning figures also come for mobile phone use while driving, for which officers issued 42 fines. There were also 96 violations for not wearing seat belts. The remaining violations, 231, pertain to other traffic offenses.
"Given the number of traffic violations detected, we take this opportunity to once again call on road users to comply with traffic regulations. Drivers, think! By irresponsible behavior and gross violation of regulations, you endanger not only your own safety but also the safety and lives of other road users," the Zagreb Police Department stated.
This weekend operation is part of the regular intensified traffic surveillance that Zagreb police conduct across the entire Zagreb Police Department. The focus is on violations that pose the greatest danger, primarily driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and speeding. On the night from Saturday to Sunday, 451 violations were recorded, and on the night from Friday to Saturday, 446, showing that the numbers barely change from night to night.
