A section of Velebitska Street in Split was closed to all traffic this morning, with police cordoning off the area between the intersections with Vinkovačka and Brune Bušića Street. A visibly damaged vehicle is at the scene, and police have confirmed that an explosion occurred during the night.
According to photos from the scene sent by readers of Dalmacija Danas, barricades have been placed on Velebitska, and part of the road is cordoned off with police tape. The damaged vehicle is within the secured area, but there is no information on whether this was a traffic accident or another incident.
Details about any injuries or those involved are not available. Police have blocked the mentioned stretch, and traffic is being diverted to surrounding streets.
The Split-Dalmatia Police Department has not yet issued an official statement, but in a response to the media, they confirmed the circumstances of the event. "On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at around 00:50 AM, in Velebitska Street in Split, a detonation occurred inside a parked vehicle. There are no injured persons, and according to initial information, no material damage has been observed to other parked vehicles or nearby buildings. The road section from the intersection of Velebitska and Brune Bušića Street to the intersection of Velebitska and Dubrovačka Street has been temporarily closed for the investigation," the police response states.
Split firefighters also responded to the scene, with three members of the Split Public Fire Brigade and one vehicle carrying out the intervention. After their response, the police took over further actions to determine the circumstances and cause of the explosion.
