The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the Seismological Service record a moderately strong earthquake felt throughout the Sisak area; sources differ in estimating the magnitude and direction of the epicenter.
Early this morning, on July 30, 2026 at 6:29 AM, a moderately strong earthquake struck the area near Sisak. According to initial data from the Seismological Service, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale, and the intensity at the epicenter was estimated at level IV on the EMS scale. At the same time, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 3.7, leading to some discrepancies in early reports.
Even the data on the exact location of the epicenter is not entirely clear. Telegram.hr reports the EMSC information that the epicenter was located 6 kilometers southwest of Sisak, while Novi list and GS Press state 6 kilometers southeast. Tportal, on the other hand, mentions an epicenter 6 km south of Sisak. The hypocenter of the earthquake, or the focus underground, was at a depth of 9 kilometers, which most sources confirm, including Telegram and Novi list.
The earthquake occurred approximately 56 kilometers southeast of Zagreb, so the shaking could be felt across the wider area of central Croatia.
Although it was a moderately strong earthquake, numerous testimonies from witnesses in the Sisak area attest to a sudden and unpleasant experience. HRT reports the citizens' words: "Rumble and strong shaking. Everything was ringing in the apartment", "Like a bomb went off followed by a long rumble", and "I had the feeling the house was going to fall, it shook so hard". One witness simply concluded: "It really shook us up".
On the EMSC app, users also left dramatic descriptions. Telegram reports messages: "It woke me from sleep, I'm still shaking" and "Strong shaking, I jumped out of bed". Novi list quotes a testimony about "rumbling and creaking of roof beams". From Topolovac they reported "rumbling and quite a shake of the house", while a resident of Mošćenica described "fairly strong shaking for several seconds". A resident of Željezara briefly said: "It burst hard".
According to data collected from the field, residents of numerous settlements in the Sisak region felt the earthquake. Tportal reports reports from Sisak, Žabno, Hrastelnica, Mala Gorica, and Glina. GS Press reports reactions from Gornje Komarevo, Topolovac, Mošćenica, and Željezara. Although reports on the magnitude differ, most national media such as HRT, Telegram, and Narod.hr cite 3.6, while Novi list, GS Press, and Tportal cite 3.7; all agree that it was a moderate tremor that woke residents and caused discomfort.
Sources currently do not report any potential material damage, and the Seismological Service at the Geophysical Department of the Faculty of Science continues to analyze the event.
