The Osijek-Baranja Police Department has confirmed unofficial information about the cause of Sunday's fire, and the negligent man faces a fine of up to five figures.
The fire that broke out on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Tvrđavica, across from the center of Osijek, was caused by a 61-year-old man whose burning of grass and plant waste got out of control. This was confirmed by the Osijek-Baranja Police Department, officially verifying yesterday's unofficial information that had been circulating around the city.
According to Osijek Express's sources, the 61-year-old will face a mandatory misdemeanor order, under which the fine could reach a five-figure amount. Although courts often reduce such fines, the negligent man will not get off without paying several thousand euros.
The fire occurred because the burning was done outside the legally permitted time frames. The fire broke out after noon, and smoke soon hung over Osijek, causing concern among residents.
Members of the Osijek Public Fire Brigade and the Gornji Grad Osijek Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. According to their reports, an area of approximately 300x400 meters was affected, with several hundred square meters of grass and low vegetation burned.
At one point, the fire threatened to engulf nearby gardens, but firefighters prioritized extinguishing the edges of the fire and prevented further spread. The fire was fully extinguished by 2:00 PM, and there was no material damage, according to available information.
This case once again highlights the danger of uncontrolled burning of plant waste during the summer months, when dry vegetation and weather conditions create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of fire.
