Fires on Sunday, August 16, 2026, did not spare eastern Croatia either. In the afternoon, a young forest, low vegetation, and dry brush burned near Ilok, on the border area between Croatia and Serbia, and in the evening a fire broke out in an open area in Vukovar, in the Sajmište neighborhood, at a site locals call the "old brick factory."
Seven Vehicles Battled Fire Near Ilok
The fire near Ilok was reported by border police officers, and seven fire trucks from the Ilok Public Fire Brigade, the Vukovar Public Fire Brigade, and the Lovas Volunteer Fire Department took part in extinguishing it. Firefighters from the Ilok Public Fire Brigade will remain at the scene overnight after the fire was brought under control, to prevent any new flare-ups.
Fire in Vukovar Quickly Extinguished
Shortly after 8 p.m., a fire also broke out in Vukovar. The report was received at 8:12 p.m. at the site of the old brick factory, located on the outskirts of Vukovar toward Negoslavci. According to information from Press032 Vinkovci, the site has been abandoned and unsupervised since the end of the Homeland War; apart from burned vegetation, there was no significant material damage.
Thanks to the quick response of firefighters, the fire was soon extinguished and did not spread toward family homes. Ultimately, the fire posed no threat to buildings or people. The cause of the fire in Vukovar has not yet been determined.
These fires show that the danger of fire is not limited to the south of Croatia but is also spreading to the eastern parts of the country, where firefighters prevented major damage with their rapid intervention.
