New threats of physical assault, verbal abuse, and death threats directed at Davorin Klobučar, president of the Brod na Kupi Local Committee and a sports-tourism worker, have prompted him to once again address the public and report the case to the Delnice Police Station. The incident occurred on August 3, 2026, between 6:00 and 6:30 PM in the settlement of Gusti Laz, about a kilometer and a half from Brod na Kupi.
Death threats in front of a witness
Klobučar told Novi list that he was clearing swimming lanes from the Kupa River after the "Upstream Kupa" swimming meet when a group of Roma disturbed the peace of bathers with their behavior in the water. They then moved toward the road where they approached his car, prompting him to go and prevent potential damage to the vehicle.
"They started provoking me, got in my face, and threatened me, saying the Gypsies would have the final say, that they would break my teeth, that the Gypsies would liquidate me. All of this was said in front of a witness, and the names of those who threatened me are known," Klobučar said.
After withdrawing, he called the Delnice Police Station, which took his statement and that of the witness. The following day, August 4, he filed a criminal complaint regarding the death threats.
Seeking protection and warning of institutional inaction
Klobučar has requested protection because he no longer feels safe for his physical well-being or his property, nor for the property he manages in the Kupa association and the Brod na Kupi Local Committee. He warned of the increasingly frequent gatherings of the Roma population in front of the store and the Croatian Volunteer Home, where their behavior disturbs citizens, and visitors avoid coming to these areas.
"I call upon and seek help from all responsible and relevant services, otherwise an outcome like the one recently seen in the Republic of Slovenia with tragic consequences is likely. The alarm is on and action must be taken," Klobučar said.
Criticism of police and DORH work
He particularly criticized the previous work of the competent authorities, claiming that he regularly calls the Delnice Police Station and gives statements to the DORH in Rijeka, but without any results. "Everything is at a standstill and there is no concrete progress," he emphasized. The incident occurred after a round table on the legality of the Roma settlement in Gusti Laz was held in Brod na Kupi in mid-June 2026, after which Klobučar came under attack from numerous residents of that settlement.
The case has been handed over to the competent police authorities, who are conducting investigative procedures, and the public will be informed of the results in a timely manner. Klobučar warns that the foundations of democracy and the free expression of one's views are threatened, and that violence threatens to become the law.
