Summary
  • The Premier League is allowing audio of player-referee conversations to be broadcast during matches for the first time.
  • Audio will be aired as part of near-instant replays, not live, from one or two situations per round.
  • Conversations related to VAR checks will not be used due to IFAB rules.
  • The number of TV matches with RefCam increases from 20 to approximately 45 this season.

The Premier League will allow the broadcast of audio recordings of conversations between players and referees during matches for the first time this season. This is an extension of the RefCam system, cameras mounted on referees' heads, which became a permanent feature of English top-flight television broadcasts last season, reports The Guardian.

From trial to permanent practice

The RefCam system was introduced last season (2025/26) after a six-week trial at the start of the campaign. The cameras allowed viewers to see near-instant replays of contentious and interesting situations from the referee's perspective, but the audio they captured was not allowed to be broadcast during transmissions. After the match, it was only available for a short time.

This season (2026/27), the rules are being relaxed. Domestic broadcasters, Sky Sports and TNT Sports, will have the opportunity to use parts of the recorded conversations during the match itself. However, there are clear limitations.

How it will work in practice

The audio will not be broadcast in real time, but as part of near-instant replays. Additionally, it is forbidden to use conversations related to situations that have undergone VAR checks, as this does not comply with the rules set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

It is planned that in each of the 38 rounds of the Premier League, audio from one or two selected situations will be broadcast. At the same time, the number of matches equipped with RefCam will increase significantly, from 20 last season to approximately 45.

Football slowly catches up with other sports

This move is another step towards television coverage that has been common in other sports for years. In-match interviews and cameras in dressing rooms have long been a staple of cricket, rugby, and many American sports broadcasts.

Football has traditionally been much more cautious about such innovations, but pressure from broadcasters and the desire for more engaging content are gradually changing the way matches are presented to viewers. For Croatian viewers, this means that broadcasts of the English championship, which are also followed in Croatia, will gain a new dimension.
