The new European football season officially begins on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, with the traditional clash between the Champions League and Europa League winners. This year's UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg, Austria, pits French champions Paris Saint-Germain against English representatives Aston Villa, with the match scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
The encounter at the Red Bull Arena, a 30,000-seat stadium that is normally home to RB Salzburg and is known as Salzburg Stadium during UEFA competitions, also offers an intriguing tactical battle between two Spanish coaches: Luis Enrique on the PSG bench and Unai Emery, who leads Aston Villa.
PSG defended their European title in May this year. In the Champions League final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, they defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time. The decisive miss came from Arsenal defender Gabriel, and the Parisians became the first club since Real Madrid (2016-2018) to win back-to-back titles.
On the other hand, Aston Villa thrashed Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in Istanbul. Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia, and Morgan Rogers ended the Birmingham club's 30-year trophy drought and secured their first major European trophy in 44 years.
According to Polymarket data, PSG enter the match as clear favorites. Their probability of winning in regular time is estimated at 55%, while the chances of a draw stand at 25%, and Aston Villa's triumph is rated at just 22%.
The UEFA Super Cup has been played since 1973, originally pitting the winners of the European Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup. After the latter was abolished in 1999, the spot went to the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) winners. Real Madrid holds the record with six titles, followed by Barcelona and AC Milan with five each, and Liverpool with four. PSG are the current holders after beating Tottenham 4-3 on penalties last season, following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
Luis Enrique emphasized the importance of the trophy and the strength of the opposition.
"There is no doubt in my mind that [the Super Cup] is a really important trophy, and Villa will be really competitive,"the PSG coach told Al Jazeera, adding that he believes Spanish football is currently at the top of the world in terms of players, coaches, and directors.
Unai Emery, on the other hand, sees the match as an opportunity for another step forward.
"Playing in the UEFA Super Cup is another chance to be there, a chance to win a trophy, to play against Paris Saint-Germain, [the best] team in the world right now and another team we can [measure ourselves against],"he stated to the same outlet.
The referee will be Somali official Omar Artan, who was previously controversially denied entry to the United States for the World Cup. As for the broadcast, the match will be shown on TNT Sports in the United Kingdom and on CBC Sports in the United States.
Interestingly, the clubs have already met in the knockout stages of the Champions League in the 2024/25 season. PSG advanced with a 5-4 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals. They won the first leg 3-1 at the Parc des Princes on April 9, 2025, while Aston Villa won the return leg 3-2 a week later, which was not enough to progress.
If the winner is not decided in regular time, there will be no extra time; instead, the match will go straight to a penalty shootout.
