Summary
  • Milorad Pupovac called an emergency press conference due to the lack of reaction to hate speech in Knin on August 5.

  • The video was posted on HOS's Facebook page and then deleted, with Pupovac accusing politicians and media of silence.

Milorad Pupovac, president of the SDSS and a member of parliament, has called an emergency press conference for Friday at 10:30 AM at the premises of the Serb National Council (SNV) in Zagreb. The reason, as announced, is "calls to violence and hate speech that could be heard in Knin on the afternoon of August 5."

Pupovac, who also chairs the parliamentary Committee on Human and Minority Rights, decided to take this step because, according to SNV, neither political actors nor the media have reacted to the controversial events so far.

Ustasha song in a restaurant

The incident refers to an outburst by Marko Skeja, former commander of the 9th Battalion of the Croatian Defense Forces (HOS) 'Rafael Boban'. In a restaurant in Knin, accompanied by a group of musicians and friends in black uniforms, he sang the Ustasha song "Evo Jure i Bobana" (Here come Jure and Boban).

The footage was initially posted on the Facebook page of HOS - Croatian Defense Forces, but was quickly removed after being picked up by the media. The song glorifies the commanders of the Ustasha Black Legion, Jure Francetić and Rafael Boban, and its lyrics celebrate the Ustasha movement and its leader Ante Pavelić, using the salute "Za dom spremni" (Ready for the homeland).

Reaction expected

The emergency press conference is scheduled for 10:30 AM at the SNV premises in Zagreb. Pupovac is expected to elaborate on his concerns about the messages that echoed through Knin on the anniversary of Operation Storm and to voice specific objections to the lack of public reaction.
