Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting on Thursday, August 13, 2026, to ensure the security of Russia's eastern borders, during which he stressed that the state's security must be guaranteed across all its borders and territories, as reported by the Russian state agency TASS.
The meeting took place in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, with participants including Pacific Fleet Commander Viktor Liina, Head of the FSB Border Service for the Sakhalin Region Sergey Makhorin, and Acting Commander of the 68th Guards Army Corps of the Ministry of Defense Alexey Shvedov.
Putin: "Our Duty Is to Ensure Security"
According to TASS, Putin stated during the meeting:
"It is clear that key tasks are being addressed today within the framework of the special military operation, but our duty is to ensure the security of the Russian state along all its borders and across all its territories."
The Russian leader also assessed that the territory within the Pacific Fleet's area of responsibility is "complex," and the situation in the fleet's operational zone is "not easy."
He added that the fleet commander had shared his assessment of the situation in the region the day before, with which he fully agrees.
"Today, I would like to hear your proposals on what else needs to be done to create conditions for the most effective achievement of our goals,"
Putin said.
Pacific Fleet Exercises
On August 12, Putin arrived to observe the final phase of the Pacific Fleet's military exercises, which began on August 4 with the aim of defending Russia's Far Eastern borders. The exercises took place in the waters of the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, and the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
The maneuvers involved nearly 60 surface ships, submarines, and support vessels, about 30 aircraft, helicopters, and drones, and more than 13,000 troops, according to TASS.
The Russian president observed the maneuvers and live-fire exercises from the command bridge of the missile cruiser Varyag, the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, and later had lunch with the crew. He thanked the commander and all sailors for the exercises, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the combat readiness of the fleet and the entire Russian armed forces.
