Director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Destin Daniel Cretton, has confirmed that the role of actress Sadie Sink is deliberately kept secret so that viewers experience the film without prior spoilers. Cretton told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is better precisely because the audience does not know certain details in advance.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton explained the philosophy behind the decision to keep Sink's role hidden.
"Keeping what Sadie's doing under wraps, you'll honestly understand when you see the movie. The movie is a better movie if you don't know certain things. I wish people didn't know anything when they go in to watch this movie, but we're not doing it for any other reason but to protect the experience of the fans", the director said. Cretton added that those who attend the premiere without prior knowledge of certain details of the film can expect a significantly better experience than those who are already familiar with story details.
Cretton emphasized that the new installment does not try to surpass the previous film in terms of spectacle and effort.
"I don't think there's any way of trying to emulate the last movie. In terms of stakes, you can't really go bigger than that last movie. So rather than trying to go bigger, we were hoping to go deeper in a different way", the director explained. This approach suggests that Brand New Day places emphasis on emotional and narrative depth, rather than on visual effects or the number of characters.
Sadie Sink, a 24-year-old American actress, became widely known for her role as Max Mayfield in the hit series Stranger Things, in which she acted from 2017 to 2025. In the new Spider-Man film, she stars alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. Speculation about her role ranges from a version of Jean Grey to an entirely new character, but Marvel and the director have not confirmed anything concrete. Earlier this month, Marvel released a video in which Sink begins to reveal her role, but her voice is covered by a graphic display of a spider web, which further fueled fans' imagination.
The actress told Nylon magazine that the scale of the Marvel franchise surprised her.
"I knew that Marvel was a big deal and had a big brand, especially Spider-Man. I know there's a huge fan base, but it feels really big. I think these blockbuster movies are a whole different beast", Sink said. She also praised Tom Holland, who helped her navigate the new environment:
"He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease", she added. As for keeping the secret about her role, Sink replied briefly:
"You just don't share the secret, it's not that hard."
The film Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to hit theaters at the end of July 2026, and Marvel also presented a number of other projects during San Diego Comic-Con. During the Hall H panel, it was confirmed that David Jonsson will take on the role of the new Black Panther in the third installment, while Ryan Gosling has been confirmed for the title role in a new Ghost Rider film. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige used the opportunity to defend the choice of Doctor Doom as the next big villain in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. Feige compared the introduction of Doom to that of Thanos, noting that Thanos was also the subject of mockery on social media in the early stages due to insufficient presence, and that Infinity War was the real moment of his introduction to the audience.
