Wayne Rooney, former captain of Manchester United and the England national team, will join forces with online commentator Mark Goldbridge. Together, they will host a new show dedicated to Manchester United this season, titled Stick to United with Wayne Rooney, reports Stijena.info.
The format is designed as a platform for discussions, analysis, and commentary on events related to the English giants. The hosting duo pairs a club legend with an author whose outspoken and often controversial views have been a topic of debate among fans for years.
The show is produced under the The Overlap network, launched in 2021 by former United captain Gary Neville. The platform initially focused on football but has since expanded to include cricket and rugby. Neville is a co-founder of the company, and these new business moves signal a desire for further growth.
Rooney already appears as an analyst on Stick to Football, also produced by The Overlap. His new role is part of a distribution deal with Disney+, which will air 50 episodes of Stick to United and 40 episodes of Stick to Football during the season.
Speaking to BBC Football, Neville said the partnership "expands our reach without compromising our identity." The tie-up with Disney represents a significant step in the project's evolution from online content to a serious media business.
Goldbridge joins the new show after Neville acquired his channels The United Stand and That's Football in April this year. According to BBC Football, an undisclosed seven-figure sum was paid for them. Goldbridge, whose real name is Brent di Cesare, has over 3.8 million subscribers across his two YouTube channels.
Clips from his videos often go viral due to his passionate reactions and unconventional football opinions. His style differs significantly from that of former professionals, which could add extra dynamism to the new show.
The collaboration is also interesting given Neville's previous criticisms of fan platforms. Notably, he clashed with ArsenalFanTV after Arsenal lost 3-1 to Chelsea in 2017. Neville described the fans' reactions towards manager Arsène Wenger as unpleasant, sparking a public debate. He later appeared in an interview on that channel to clarify his stance.
In addition to his new role, Rooney will continue working with other media outlets. His show The Wayne Rooney Show returns to BBC platforms, and the former England international will retain his role as an analyst on Match of the Day. This keeps him among the most prominent former players in the British sports media landscape.
