At least ten people were killed on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in a Russian missile attack on the settlement of Pechenihy in the Kharkiv region in eastern Ukraine. According to Governor Oleh Syniehubov, at least 18 people were injured, and civilian infrastructure was hit, including ten private houses, a café, and shops.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to social media and described the attack as a "brutal attack on a road junction." "This morning, the Russians brutally struck a road junction in Pechenihy, in the Kharkiv region, where a post office and shops are located, surrounded by residential buildings," Zelensky wrote.
He also announced a response: "We will definitely respond to this Russian strike. And it is no less important that partners also supplement our righteous kinetic responses with their steps in putting pressure on Russia and providing support to Ukraine."
Governor Syniehubov reported that "the occupiers struck the central part of the settlement with two Banderol missiles." N1 BiH reports that five shops and fifteen cars were also damaged, while a fire engulfed an area of 400 square meters. According to Klix.ba, seven cars were set on fire, and initial reports spoke of eight injured before the number rose to 18.
"Doctors are providing necessary assistance to the wounded. Debris from damaged buildings is being cleared, while emergency services are patrolling the surrounding area in case anyone else needs help," the governor added. Pechenihy is located about 55 kilometers east of Kharkiv.
Simultaneously, the Ukrainian military carried out one of the largest drone attacks on the Russian capital. According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, 620 drones were heading toward the capital and its surroundings. About 180 were destroyed in Moscow's airspace, and operations at the capital's airports were temporarily suspended.
Governor of the Moscow region Andrei Vorobyov reported three injured, including a ten-year-old girl. A warehouse of the logistics concern Wildberries was hit again, and a fire that broke out was quickly extinguished. Residential buildings, shops, and a power plant were also damaged.
In the occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region, in the city of Enerhodar, a Ukrainian drone hit a bus stop near the nuclear power plant. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), one person was killed and 15 were injured. All victims were plant employees or subcontractor workers waiting for a bus to work.
Russian occupation authorities blamed Kyiv for the attack, while there was no comment from the Ukrainian side at the time of publication. A drone attack was also recorded in the Brovary district of the Kyiv region, where civilian infrastructure was damaged.
