In the night from Saturday to Sunday, August 9, 2026, deadly strikes were exchanged between Russia and Ukraine, leaving at least five people dead and dozens injured on both sides of the border. Russian forces targeted several Ukrainian regions, while the Ukrainian military carried out a drone attack on the Russian city of Belgorod, located just about thirty kilometers from the border.
The most severe consequences in Ukraine were recorded in Kharkiv, where a Russian drone hit a residential building. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that two people were killed in the attack. "Four floors of an ordinary residential building were destroyed," Zelensky wrote on X. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that 23 people were injured.
At the same time, Odesa was targeted by a fierce missile attack. Eight people were injured in the strikes, and the power grid, port, and residential buildings were damaged. Zelensky also condemned the "absolutely brutal" attack on energy infrastructure near a shopping center in Pavlohrad, where nine people were injured, including four children.
While Ukraine endured strikes, its forces carried out a drone attack on Russia's Belgorod region. According to acting regional governor Alexander Chouvaev, three people were killed and 25 injured in the attack, including children aged four and nine. Chouvaev added that fires broke out on cars, two buildings, and one house.
Reacting to the wave of attacks, President Zelensky reiterated his appeal to Western allies. "More pressure, more sanctions against Russia, and more air defense for Ukraine are needed," he said. According to him, Russia relies on "ballistic terror," having launched 61 missiles of various types at Ukraine this week alone. This statement comes amid increasingly evident weaknesses in Ukraine's air defense, particularly against ballistic threats. According to UN data, the conflict has claimed more civilian casualties this year, and the Russian invasion, which began four and a half years ago, continues with no prospects for a peace agreement.
