Russian forces carried out a series of separate attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Odesa on Saturday, August 9, 2026, resulting in civilian casualties and significant material damage. The hardest hit was the Saltivskyi district in Kharkiv, where a missile struck a high-rise building.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed that an enemy missile hit a residential building in the Saltivskyi district. "An enemy strike has been recorded in the Saltivskyi district. Preliminary information, which is still being confirmed, indicates that the enemy hit a high-rise residential building," Terekhov told Ukrainska Pravda.
According to information reported by NOELREPORTS, the building is ten stories tall, with floors seven through nine destroyed. Two people lost their lives in that attack. Reports on the number of injured vary: Terekhov mentioned 12 injured at 7:44 a.m. local time, while NOELREPORTS cites a figure of 21 injured. Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, confirmed the information about two fatalities.
In addition to the struck building, Russian forces also hit a neighboring residential block. Terekhov reported that people were trapped in that building and that emergency services were working to extract them.
Meanwhile, during the night of August 8-9, Russian forces carried out a combined missile and drone attack on Odesa and the Odesa region. According to initial reports from Ukrainska Pravda, eight people were injured in the missile attack on the city of Odesa itself. NOELREPORTS confirmed the same number for the entire region, stating that at least eight people were injured.
Anadolu Agency, citing sources in Kyiv, published cumulative figures for both attacks: two dead and 29 injured. At the same time, reports from Moscow speak of consequences on the Russian side. According to the same sources, 13 people were injured in the night attacks on Russia's Belgorod region.
