The Opatija city administration has confirmed that, after the summer season and the public procurement procedure, the restoration of the Lungomare in the section below the Belvedere Hotel, near one of the city's most popular bathing areas, will commence. The estimated value of the project is €240,000, while the final amount will only be known once the contractor is selected, as reported by Novi list on August 19, 2026.
The project includes the rehabilitation of the promenade that runs along Belvedere Beach. Years of exposure to weather conditions and significant structural damage have necessitated the renovation, which will ensure the safety of passersby and preserve the value of this public space.
The works will cover the section of the coastal promenade above the bathing area, including the load-bearing structure that has been eroded by the sea and the passage of time. On the upper level, waterproofing and new stone paving will be installed. The existing structure located beneath the promenade, which once served as changing cabins and storage for beach equipment, will also be renovated and structurally reinforced.
The main project is signed by Barč d.o.o., and the start of works, following the completion of the open public procurement, is planned for this autumn, no later than the end of October. The expected duration of the works is six months, with weather conditions having the greatest impact, as noted by the City.
The Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure has approved non-repayable funds of €60,000 for this investment to the City of Opatija, through a public call for co-financing the construction, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of maritime domain in general use for 2026.
It is worth recalling that before the start of the bathing season, the City of Opatija invested in the rehabilitation of Belvedere Beach, which had been damaged by storms. For that purpose, €80,000 was received from the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
"Given the unique value and importance of the coastal promenade for Opatija, repairs and rehabilitation are carried out every year, as needed, after stormy southerly winds and other weather events."
Officials from the City of Opatija note that no major investments, other than the one mentioned above, are currently planned in this year's city budget. However, there are locations that should be the subject of future investments in the reconstruction and arrangement of the coastal path, which will be proposed for appropriate calls for non-repayable national and European funds.
