The film "Pavilion" by director Dino Mustafić has won the award for Best Screenplay (Meilleur Scénario) at the recently concluded Festival international du film de Bretagne in France. The recognition was given in the European Film selection, with screenwriter Viktor Ivančić and co-screenwriter Emir Imamović Pirke receiving the honor.
In the official award statement, the festival jury described "Pavilion" as "a dark and powerful political satire" that condemns the institutional neglect of the elderly. Through sharp irony, the film speaks to dignity, freedom, and the limits of rebellion.
"We thank director Dino Mustafić for this dark and powerful political satire, which condemns the institutional abandonment of the old and reminds us, with fierce irony, that when dignity and freedom are humiliated, violence can become legitimate," reads the jury's statement from the Festival international du film de Bretagne.
"Pavilion" is a darkly humorous social drama about a group of nursing home residents who, faced with humiliation, injustice, and institutional indifference, decide to take control of their own lives. Armed with illegal means, they occupy the home, take staff hostage, and clash with authorities. Blending black humor, absurdity, and drama, the film raises universal questions about dignity, freedom, and society's responsibility toward the most vulnerable.
The film features some of the biggest names in regional theater and film, including Rade Šerbedžija, Zijah Sokolović, Miralem Zubčević, Ksenija Pajić, Jasna Diklić, Branka Petrić, Mirjana Karanović, as well as Meta Jovanovski, Vladimir Jurc Lali, Kaća Dorić, Muhamed Bahonjić, Iva Barišić, Ermin Brava, Alban Ukaj, Nikša Butijer, Vedrana Božinović, Ermin Sijamija, Aleksandar Seksan, Snežana Vidović, Selma Mehanović, Zlatan Školjić, Adis Mehanović, Siniša Vidović, Faketa Salihbegović-Avdagić, Ivica Šarić, Mugdim Avdagić, Sabina Kulenović, and Ana Novaković.
The award in Brittany is just the latest in a series of accolades for the film. After premiering at the opening of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, "Pavilion" has continued its successful international festival run, winning more than thirty awards and recognitions at regional, European, and world festivals. Honors have come in categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and acting achievements.
The film is a co-production between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, further underscoring its regional significance and the power of a story that resonates with audiences and juries far beyond the region's borders.
